E.L.F. 6 in 1 palette

The other week as always browsing tweets and came across Eyes Lips Face UK team whose distribution company Distribeauty had just set up a Facebook page. As a treat for being the 1st 100 to like the page you could win some free E.L.F. makeup. I was like well why not try to be a winner today. And lo and behold I got there on time and within a week a rather large package arrived at my door.

It contained their 6 in 1 Beauty to Go palette that comes with 60 eyeshadows, 12 lip colours, 4 blushes, 2 bronzers and a compact with mirror. These are all divided into 6 palettes which snap into the compact. So would be perfect for a night or weekend or way or simply just to travel with. I have yet to try these colours out yet but from the swatches on E.L.F.'s blog I know I will love using these. Over the last year I have become such a fan of E.L.F.

Now with so much blush at my disposal I guess I will have to try them out more often. My friend is a Makeup Artist and she always makes my cheeks pop. I still have a lot to learn. With all this freeness I definitely have a lot more to play with.

A parody of reality

One of the people I follow on twitter tweeted this video by @Chescaleigh. It is called "Shit white girls say to black girls". Now I have seen some response videos that completely miss the point whilst others have expressed that it has been an eye opener. The part of this parody I relate to the most is the hair issues. In previous jobs schools I have had question after question thrown at me about my hair. These hair questions and the want to touch come hard and fast whether I wearing my own hair or extensions I bought. I have no qualms telling people when I have extensions that it is not mine but it becomes tiresome when everyday you are asked the same questions. Thankfully the last group I worked with had a more mature attitude and did not have desires to get in my hair with their fingers. But imagine even if it is not yours it is attached to you. I have had hair issues with other non African Diaspora races too. Having said that I know a few Black people that did not realise I had so much hair. Shame on them!!.

Trivial things that have been said to me is that my own hair reminded someone of their pubic hair. Another lady touched my hair and was like "oh its so soft", as if it was not going to be. Anyway if you have not seen this video take a look. It has gotten 3million views so far. Justice for Stephen Lawrence

Today two of the men who took part in the racially motivated attack on Stephen Lawrence which led to his death by stabbing have been found guilty. Gary Dobson and David Norris have been found guilty through DNA evidence from modern scientific techniques. This young man lost his life just because a group of thugs wanted to attack someone based on the colour of their skin. Stephen was trying to get home with his friend Duwayne Brooks when they were set up on. Stephen lost his life. He was 18 years old when he died and the conviction of at least two of his murderers has taken 18 years. Britain has always been in denial of its true race relations. Modern events have proven some people still feel this way. Maybe one day we all will be treated as humans equally and not just a colour.

Stephen Lawrence Rest In Peace. I pray the Lawrence family can start to get some closure from these sad events.

Happy New Year 2012

Wishing you all a blessed and prosperous 2012. 2011 has been a bit of an uphill struggle and blessing rolled into one. But such is life you just dust yourself off and keep it moving. There are so many changes that I want to make in my life. Though I know I need to change my mindset and not just because it is a new year.

I am not making any New Years resolutions. The decisions I make are life decisions which can't simply be inspired by the turn of time. Things I have yet to conquer are my weight and my writing. With my weight I just need to motivate myself to get up and go. As I know once I start it will be good.

As for my writing. It is quite sad when people who have known you from back in the day ask how is your writing going. Only to turn around and say umm not much happening. Even harder is when they say but why your xyz good etc. Thankfully God has blessed me with a fabulous cousin who is an aspiring writer. She really encourages me to get back in the habit and gives me loads of positivity. Also I do know a published writer who encouraged to me to keep at my blog just to get me back in the habit of writing.

I am very eager to get a job and see the back of any government institution. They make me feel worst than they ought to. I have a lot of people tell me that I should get a job I want to do instead of just work but I just want to write. So any job that pays the bills will do especially if it does not emotionally drain me.

I wish you all the best in 2012 and hope and pray that your mind and spirit is renewed. So that this year will be different to last year.

Football racism brings out racism in Britain?

I am not a huge football fan. Though will have to take note as my sons get older as they wish to play this game seriously. With that in mind the current sad state of affairs in British football is the blatant racism (though I am told the majority are not like the current ones in the press). I have been told that a certain English player is known for his racism and the recent comments in the press is the tip of the iceberg. Now when countries on the continent of Europe are exposed by their football spectators for racism the Daily Mail and others UK press are quick to say how bad this is. Even the comment section is full of talk about how backwards those countries are etc etc. However when it is Brit being pulled up for a racist comment or using inappropriate language they complain about political correctness and fail to see or accept that the words they choose to use causes an offence. Should you return the favour they will be singing from a different song sheet.

Anyway here are a few quotes from the article about Alan Hansen referring to Black footballers as "coloured". Indeed a faux pax and he is right to be pulled up on it. Notice what comments get loads of green arrows and the ones which are red arrowed. For this particular paper this is to be expected. I expect no more no less of their readers. I am a reader of a different calibre.

You notice how Desmond in the 1st quote is upset that the Black community is standing up for itself. Most of the green arrowed comments say the same thing so I did not bother give them anymore air time on my blog. There are so may terms that my forefathers/mothers fought to eradicate that it is only right that Diaspora Africans continue to keep folk on their toes. Desmond fails to realise that if an entire community is offended by the term it is offensive and should not be used unless of course what you wish to do is offend. Surely there are better things you can do with your words.

The last three comments speak for themselves and are in the top worst rated section. Speaks volumes if you ask me. I am not linking the article this time but if you wish to see it for yourself go to their website and look for any article on race and you will see even more like that. The comments that show progression get red arrowed.

To my brothers and sisters and cousins please continue to pull people up on their behaviour and what they say. People these days know what is offensive and what terms have died even though some mis-guided souls like to call themselves derogatory words. Just know that the majority of us don't play that. We know better so we do better. Those who do not wish to do better still got some growing to do.

Soap and Glory Big Splendour

I think I definitely am a person who loves Soap and Glory products. Not everything they make appeals to me but the body butters, shower gels and face scrubs are my fave. Money Saving Expert website newsletter always let's you know when the offers will be available. I was so disappointed when the hat box came out a few years ago and I missed it. Last year I bought the Tote Bag and ended up giving away a few products as I bought two lots. I gave away the shampoos and some of the body scrubs.

So this year I went to Boots to pick up the bargain buy. Boots staff were scattered around the shop to promote this product. I was a bit surprised when sales pitch lady comes from nowhere trying to sell me something I had already picked up firmly in my hand. If these are still in stock when I go back to Boots next week I might buy another one.

Anyway I love the selection this year a lot more than the previous. So much stuff I will use myself and not give away. The products come in a big vanity case that has an internal drawstring cover. The original price for the set was £60 and I paid £25 as part of the deal plus it gave me 100 Boots Advantage card points. Not bad for 10 products that individually can cost you £5-10 on average each.

Wet N Wild surprise finds in £1 shop

I have been hastily doing my Christmas shopping in the last few days. After buying a game which required batteries my friend whispered in my ear pound shop as a hint not to buy the same batteries in the toyshop that cost more.

As I have discovered before, the pound shops which all include Poundland Poundworld 99p shop Everythings a £1 etc tend to sell similar stuff with small variations. Previously I came across Rimmel Lipsticks and Sally Henson Nail polishes. Which I could not say no to.

So to my surprise I noticed that Everythings a £1, was selling Wet n Wild eyeshadows and lip liners. Years ago Wet N Wild had a UK website but that closed after a sale and the next thing you know all the beauty vloggers on YouTube and bloggers are raving about the wonderfulness of this cheap brand that gives you high quality for the price. I would love to get hold of the more popular products as the eyeshadow sets but in the mean time I am happy with what I have for now.

So I ended up spending £4 for 8 products. I bought the Wet n Wild beautybenefis triple fusion eyeshadow, the Beauty Brilliance mineral eye shimmer and Dual Effects lip pencils which I had thought was a shadow stick but it will serve a purpose one day.

I feel completely at a lost right now. I was made redundant and was not able to secure more work. I am making use of a work placement company. I am not sure if that is how you would describe them. Basically the company I worked for pay them to help us find work. They are definitely 100% better than the Job Centre and are more realistic. When I am back in work fully I will speak of my experiences. So far not great. As for the council that is even worst.

Did you see the X-factor? Oh my days I thought the finale was a complete anti-climax. You just knew who the producers wanted to win. It was too obvious this year. Congrats to Little Mix being the 1st group winners. As I have said on other social platforms. The fact they are female should give them an edge. No male singer has actually done well post first single or album if they were lucky.

I have not developed this blog the way I wanted to, but hopefully that will change. Plus my faith blog will see more regular postings. Both should get a facelift soon. Especially this one. It needs brightening up.

One more thing I am finally making use of my .com. The tech guys at my Domain registrar did all the techie stuff for me. After I has tried and wiped my url off the web. Silly me. Dream Another Dream Ball Review

I attended the Dream Another Dream Charity Ball on Friday 25th November 2011. It was a lovely evening full of entertainment, great company and good food all in the name of a wonderful cause. When You Wish Upon a Star charity which makes dreams come true for sick children. They organise various trips dependant upon what the individual child and family needs are. It could be anything from DisneyLand to a meeting their favourite celebrity. They have been in operation since 1990 and have granted over 14,000 wishes without government support. So fundraising events like these are very important to help grant more wishes each day.

The Ball was as I said before was lovely. Alison Hammond was the host for the night and she is just as lovely in person as on TV. Her laugh is amazing. The Arjana dancers opened up the nights entertainment and now I feel like I need to learn their belly dancing skills. They gave a good performance. They were followed by the Derby Rock Choir whose appearance was their 1st together as they have only been together for 9 weeks. They did very well.

Next up was comedian Charlie Hale. From the word go he took set on me. How unfortunate it was for me to be sat virtually at the front. Intermittently throughout his set he kept telling me you cracked it. A few on my table were "picked on" but he was so hilarious. When he did the raffle he gave a running commentary on everyone that got up. One guy was referred to as the Halifax man.

He was followed by a very talented singer called Lucy Spraggan who sang a mash up of songs including her very own about Facebook. Her song Tea and Toast was quite a sad but happy song. She sang for about ten minutes even though she had a really bad sore throat and still sounded really good. Entertainment for the night ended with Shar Musiq who was a little nervous but that was okay because she has a beautiful voice and sang beautifully. She definitely has the potential to have a lovely future career.

The Ball also had an auction for signed memorabilia such a signed boxing glove by Nigel Benn, signed JLS disc poster and a Manchester United football signed by the whole team. Even better as mentioned before was the raffle. The prizes were amazing. On offer was Debenhams personal shopper experience, paint-balling day, restaurant vouchers, wine and more. Yay me I won a £60 voucher for the Clink Spa which entitles me to a full body massage. I cannot wait to claim my prize and will surely share my experience in a later post.

In all the night raised about £600 for the When You Wish Upon Star charity. It was the first event arranged by Leanne Burke of The Leanne Burke Show, who is also the author of the book The Fight of My Life. Check out the video below that shows highlights of the events.

Slow progress

It has been a while since I last posted. What I have come to find is that my concerns were right. The teachers do not seem overly concerned but I am. I was observing how everyone in AD's class is placed. It became clear to me that the brightest pupils are all sat together whilst those struggling are sat together. This to me is major problem. My son has struggled with reading but he can read a little bit just not quite on the level according to the guidelines. He is sat with all the other kids who are struggling. His maths is really good and he is doing well there. It is just his reading. If I could still afford to pay Ms Z. I would. I felt that she improved his reading and confidence a lot.

So now I am seriously considering buying the book Reading Reflex which is what I had planned to do months ago. The reviews make it seem it is something that can work. Everyday my son wants to read and do maths. His teachers always say that he is very keen to learn and very enthusiastic. Though more is needed. I also think the governments current preferred method of teaching is at fault. Phonics should be mixed in with other systems of reading. I was not taught the phonics way and I excelled. Phonics is okay for learning sounds but I think it should not be the only system in place.

The aim now is to build confidence in reading and get him to a point of complete independent reading. He currently receives extra sessions of guided reading every day but more needs to be done.

How about some pub grub

Last week my whole entire department at work headed off to the pubs and bars in our local town to have a few goodbye drinks. I had not eaten since the night before and was very hungry. I needed some food in me to justify the midday drinking session I was about to be a part of which was to last hours.

Mackerel on Toast

I have only ever been into The Fat Cat (which is often called Fat Cats) at night for drinks. So I was quite happy to know they served food and it was not the usual pub grub. Slightly pricier and more upmarket. My friend assured me that the food would be quality. I was pleasantly surprised and grateful. My only confusion is that my initial waitress wandered off after my table said we needed a few minutes and than was replaced by a waiter. Not a problem really just thought that was a bit odd.

Now I am very cautious about ordering foods in stranger unknown to me places or unusual choices, when I go out to eat. Once my waiter confirmed that the fish was boneless (within reason - yes they had a mini disclaimer) I decided to try the Mackerel on toast which came with a free cup of soup. I have no idea what soup it was as I went from thinking it was Lentils to Butternut squash. Who knows but the little soup was an ok free edition. The Mackerel tasted so lovely. It was moist and delicious and the toast which had some fancy salad was an added bonus. I did not care for the fancy salad. Pretty to look at but awful to eat. That being my only complaint, which is a minor. My meal was finished off with a side of chips and cheese.

Bangers and Mash

Over at the Friary more food and drink consumed. My friend ordered Bangers and Mash. I had never seen bangers and mash served up that way. The potatoes on the bottom top with big juicy sausages and smothered in gravy. It looked so yummy. If I was a pork eater I would have wanted a taste. Myself ordered a light snack of cheesy nachos with all the trimmings. Disappointed I did not get a pic of my other friends Nachos as she ordered the ones with Chilli con carne type of topping. It so reminded me of my childhood overseas and Chilli Cheese Fritos.

My drink at the Friary was something else. I stepped out the box and copied my friend. These days I tend to stick to wine or brandy. This pinky purple concoction I was rod was on draught and was a mixture of fruity ciders toffee apple, ginger and a few more I cant remember. It was not too sweet and lasted a long time.

Dr Conrad Murray found Guilty

Dr Conrad Murray has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson by administering hospital grade sedative Propofol. In the below clip you can hear a squeal as the verdict is read out. News reports now say that was MJ sis Latoya Jackson reaction.

Many people rightly believe that MJ was partly to blame for his addictions but so where all his doctors who chose money over good medical practice. Murray acknowledged that he was trying to wean MJ off the sedative which MJ often referred to as milk. Sometimes in life you have to choose whether you are an enabler or a preventer or simply do not partake nor support a person's addiction. Murray was an enabler. Looking at pictures of the doctor before and how he looked in court. I think he is somewhat remorseful and definitely a defeated broken man. His career is gone all because of this lapse which is called medical malpractice.

Let's hope the Jackson family can move forward now.

Gamu influence lives on

Do you remember last years Xfactor. It brought about one of the most controversial shows. Gamu was the singer with the most amazing natural talent. She lived in Scotland with her mum and siblings and had become very much part of her community fabric. On Youtube you can see her singing in church and on other stuff too. When she entered the Xfactor competition the busy bodies at the UK Border Agency tried to turn her mum and her into an example to say they have control of borders. Thankfully her and her family have been given their stay.

Anyway over the past few days Xfactor USA was on and the very lovely Rachel Crow sang Walking on Sunshine. Nicole Sherzinger was a bit unsure of the lyric change, yet Simon Cowell stated that he was being inventive. There was no mention of Gamu from Xfactor UK who was the one responsible for the lyric change. I usually discuss this show on BBM and one of my friends pointed out that this was in fact Gamu's version.

It seems my friend was not the only one who spotted this. Simon Cowell is definitely wrong for taking the credit of the lyric change when Gamu is the one who made those changes. British people have been pointing out under Rachel's video that Simon should give Gamu royalties for the changes. Just shows how much Gamu was adored.

Please note I do not feel the issue is with Rachel singing Gamu's version but that Simon Cowell has taken the credit for it.

Last week was half term in the UK, so most school kids were off school for the week. I decided to visit my hometown London for a quick fly by visit. Also to get the opportunity to se my friends gorgeous baby and catch up with friends. I was not able to visit family just because of the distant and travelling with kids would have been too much hassle for me.

This visit reminded me that I hate the Underground. I just feel that some lines are so dusty and hot and sticky and well I just never liked it anyway. When I lived in London I avoided that as much as possible. Though this time around I must say I do appreciate it as it shortened my journeys a lot. Though so far Kings Cross / St Pancras is the only station that wins hands down for accessibility. Many tourists pour through that station and clearly when they gave it an upgrade that was part of the design. They have lifts. Stairs and escalators are awful when it comes to travelling with kids in or out of pushchairs. Not to forget luggage.

It does make me wonder how disabled people are supposed to get around when all these stations do not have such access. Britain is surely not quite there. I have been on the underground over the past years with a 3 wheeler a child in a stroller child in hand and luggage in tow. Awful awful

On a brighter note I am appreciating that underground train a bit more even though it makes me feel a tad claustrophobic.

Children are not colourblind

I have been watching the BBC series on mixed race Britannia. One of the ladies featured was born to a Jamaican mum and white European Englishman. She spoke about how she was adopted due to her mums mental health and that she was placed in a white family in a white area. Growing up she had almost no non-white interaction. On her first few visits to see her birth mum she was scared of her because of her dark brown skin. I do not care what anyone says, she was obviously told or observed and overheard certain things that would lead to such a reaction. It did not help that she was not around both races that made her. She did however speak of being called names and her adoptive mother telling her to respond to the ignorant folk that she did not have to spend thousands on a holiday to get a tan. However she had no diverse culture as what is normally said to be celebrated by mixed race people. The man she met introduced her to west indian food and bit more culture.

Now I mention this because we are always told that kids see no colour. Well someone told me that about that animal that is supposed to be mans best friend. Anyway I was sat at home with my boys when I over heard a conversation taking place. My youngest who is currently 3yrs (and three quarters) attends playgroup and my oldest is 6yrs old. They are doing their usual banter and than suddenly I hear son 2 say to his brother "you're black hahaha" and pointing his finger at him as he spoke. Son1 was quick to reply and said "No! I am not black, I am brown!" My ears my eyes did a double take. To make sure I was not hearing things I enquired what was said and the exact same thing was repeated.

Son2 goes to a playgroup the children are various backgrounds though predominantly white. All I can take from this is that some kid who is already being programmed by his/her parents has told my baby he is black. At home we just say Jamaican and British etc. I told Son1 yes you are right you are brown. It would be wrong for me to tell him that this crayon is brown which is darker than you and for me to tell him oh but your skin colour is black. I hate to think what sort of conversations take place in some people's homes. Now though Son2 calls himself brown and they both recognise the various shading our family has. Maybe this new generation will move people towards nation and culture rather than skin colour of which the current ones do not actually fit.

I have had many debates about the use of Black and African etc. Some African Americans from Bill Cosby to the common man do not appreciate their African genetics and just want to be called American and happily accept Black over African. I myself I am fine to a limited degree with Black in a political sense when not expanded to be all encapsulating to other non european races. However when it comes to describing me and who I am. I am an African-Caribbean by way of Jamaica that just happens to be British. Mouthful? No, because I do no often have these conversations. White folk or rather Europeans are like well your English as you are born here but culturally I am a West Indian Brit and as a people is recognised in this way politically too.

All in all no one can tell me that kids do not see colour. My children have been seeing colours from the moment their eyes focused and only as they have come into contact with other children whose parents are a bit loose with the tongue began to pick up skin colour. Son1 never had such an experience when went to nursery. I still feel like complaining but I am leaving it and correcting what they hear as and when it comes along. They believe me, after all, over everyone else (including Daddy.......).

Sidenote: The issue for me is not that my child has been called "black" but the way in which it was said. The children are aged between 2-4yrs old. Yes as my hubby says children name call all the time but this at this age is of an adult nature and cannot be accepted with no form of concern.

BB is too integrated in life

With it's ever growing popularity Research in Motion's business come everyday man smartphone is suffering. I cannot tell you how many times services are down. There was me thinking people have not paid their subscription but as with every crackberry addict a few clicks of the mouse well a general browse on twitter and voila. They are having server issues. It can only be the answer. The beauty of this outtage is that my beloved friends and family are not sending me countless BBM broadcast messages telling me if I dont do A B C D something bad will happen. Honestly I pay for the service so who are you trying to fool. Well whilst BBM is down I guess I will have to send a text or wait for it.... pick up the phone and a dial a number. Unless of course I choose to send an email. Technology should be an aide to what we do everyday but damn it, it sure feels like it has become so integrated that when it does not work it feels like someone has thrown a spanner in the works.

I used to think that Muse was just an over priced accessories shop. However I would always go there when they had a sale as they tend to sell some pretty pieces of jewellery. On Saturday I ventured to town my excuse to take in the sun and shop. I passed by Muse and was in awe of the price tag £2 and £3. When paying for my items I asked the sales assistant how long the sale was on for and she kindly told me that it is now an outlet shop and the prices will always be this low. Oh yes I shall be going back. There are some earrings that are out of my comfort zone that I wish to give a go and at these prices should not hurt the pocket. I took some pictures of what I bought. Yes pics not best quality but hey I am no amateur or professional photographer.

My good friends has since pointed out to me that Muse has been an outlet shop for ages. So I am so late.

So AD has been back at school for a full week now. His homework diary is huge. As he goes to a catholic school it also includes a nice section of short prayers. I am happy with this as we are a Christian family.

His homework has been to practice writing his name and writing numbers 1-10. When he was working with Ms Z this would have been easy no argument. With me he seems to want to be in control and not take direction. Thankfully his Dad backs me up and we manage to get him to concentrate.

I need to find a way to get him to write better and still improve his reading.

Racism is not just verbal

I was reading a Christian blog post about The Help, book turned film at Think Christian. This commentary caught my attention. It acknowledges that racism exist but people only talk down those who are blatant racists. Often people refuse to accept that racism is displayed and acted out without actually verbally exchanging racial expletives. Anyway check out the comment below and tell me what you think.

The fact that Hilly is characterized as such as the blatant enemy is a source of frustration for me. Scapegoating her as an evil-racist is such a dangerous, yet common, practice in white racial literature. We (white folk) are allowed to distance ourselves from her clearly-inappropriate 'racist' views. Thus, we are free to identify with the white-savior heroine, congratulating ourselves that we would never be so obviously racist.

These sentiments play into white folks' tendencies to associate the word 'racist' with people that blatantly espouse hatred, rather than examine the nuances of systemic racial advantage and subconscious bias. Similarly, setting the book in the 1960's, invites a congratulatory look on how far we have come, rather examining the modern consequences of that era. As long as we're not that bad, we must be alright (read: "I'm basically a good person, I'm not a sinner"). Macon D of 'Stuff White People Do' notes: "While The Help is about people who risk their lives to challenge the status quo of their day, the book itself does very little to challenge the status quo of its own day." The fact is, the attitudes articulated in the book are still alive and well today, if more hushed. (source)

Summer Tutoring complete

Last Tuesday marked the final tutor session for AD. He returns to school this week and will be in Year 1. His Tutor Ms Z. said that his confidence at sounding out the letters and blending them together has improved. Such a clear difference from his first session to the last. She is interested to know how he progresses at school. I have sat down with him to read and I could tell he has a better understanding of how reading works. He often says to me that he wants to do his homework, which is reading. I hope and pray he develops the same love of reading I have. He already has an impressive library at his disposal.

Redundancy Looms

The company I work found itself in a peculiar position. Affected by the recession that I am yet to see any recovery from and this unelected government that is doing more to lose jobs than create them. So the part of the business I work for which is an FSA regulated firm was sold to a rival. We went through the TUPE consultation and then two weeks later we were told we are to lose our jobs. However in the meantime we will be needed to help migrate the work to their existing infrastructure. Such a shame really as the company I work for was quite iconic and innovative and pretty much grasped online technology for its customers as a core service that others were only offering optionally.

Anyway about 1300-1500 people are losing their jobs with me. Yes that many plus I calculated that where I live in the East Midlands about four thousand people in total will probably join the Dole queue at the same time. Sine June I have been looking for a new job and it is so dire and de-motivating. One of the jobs my friend found and sent me would have involved my childcare costs increasing by a further £410 just for four days. Plus the jobs with less hours I cant even consider unless I do two of them, because this un-elected Coalition government has changed the rules. So currently you need to work 16 hours a week to qualify for any in-work benefits as of April 2012 you will need 25 hours. I have found a job that offers 22hours which I will apply for anyway and fingers crossed if get the job I can ask for 3 more hours.

Working is my priority as there are things I want to buy and hopefully return to studying. So many people are telling me that should now think about what I really want to do. To be honest I want to be employed. Once I am in another job than I can think about choices. Being unemployed limits your choices.

My temporary employer as I see them to compensate for the job losses are providing job fairs and careers advisors to help us find jobs. I have a consultation this week. Right now I will keep looking and praying. Oh and one more thing. They are making us redundant at Christmas. So I am facing a thin Christmas, My son's 4th Birthday will be a stretch and then my Birthday in January will probably not be celebrated. I might get a temp job but fingers crossed I get a permanent one instead as that is what I need. Please feel free to give me job hunting tips and surviving redundancy.

Reading by memory or skill

AD had another tutor session. Next week will be his last session, only because the new school term will soon begin. Yes not a reason to stop but we will see how he progresses at school in year 1 before continuing his tutor sessions. My friend suggests using Kumon which has a longer commitment and possibly higher costs. I will consider it nonetheless at some point.

During AD's most recent tutor session his reading has improved a lot. I queried if it was all just memory but Ms Z. says that it is part memory and part sounding out the words and blending the sounds together. It is the stage that he is at. I so want him to excel with reading so that he can start to enjoy the nice mini library of books I have bought him over the years.

His handwriting is starting to improve too. He has been writing the tail of the lowercase 'A' on the left and not the right. This has been pointed out to him and he is doing his best to remember. What I need to now do is look at things to do at home during school term to keep his mind ticking over.

Have you heard of SB.TV? Well I am always browsing the pages of Madnews blog and have come across their name a few times. I watched the documentary about them and their I believe website launch a few months ago. It was very interesting to see how everything came together for the young lad and his team. Now Jamal Edwards has been featured in Google current video blog. This infomercial style blog has been featured during prime time TV shows and has been the feature video on YouTube. I find this refreshing to watch as currently many have slated young people as lazy good for nothings. However through Jamal you see the other side of the spectrum A young lad doing something he enjoys and well on is way to become an entrepreneur like Richard Branson who he has met and has somewhat of a cameo in the below video. I may just take occasional peaks now. Oh and definitely check out their "About us" section you will be amazed to see how far reaching they are interacting with grass roots organisations in the community that hopes to bring about positive change and recognise those who do. His mum Brenda Edwards who was a former X-factor finalist must be so proud of him. Well done Jamal!!

The Help movie

I did a review of this book called The Help towards the end of last year. One of my readers commented that the book will be made into a film. I was so pleased to hear that. The book is such a good read worth reading before you see the film.

I am dismayed to read on the blogs and on twitter that there is so much controversy surrounding this film in America. The main issues people have it is that is a film showing Black women as maids. I have no issues with this. African Diaspora people need to embrace their past and history. No other race seems so set on forgetting. We know that in today Black women occupy many different areas of work and continue to strive and do well. So why the controversy. I feel more of our history should be told in film and books, both good and bad.

Is it a case that we need to pull out the beautifully researched and presented books of Chancellor Williams. Who discusses African history from before European and Asian interaction where kingdoms where spoken of as Dynasties. If all you can see in The Help is a movie that puts black women in a bad light you have missed the point. I suggest you read the book and decide if the film is for you. There is more to these women then just being somebody's maid. You will not know that if you do not read the book or see the film.

I hope it does not take long to reach UK shores. I could do with an adult night at the cinema. Have you read the book or seen the film? What are your thoughts?

Tutoring review

Yesterday AD spent his scheduled time with his tutor Ms Z. She was lovely as usual. The session began with a game of Fishing for Phonics. There are a handful of picture boards and the child has to tell you what objects and things they can see. The the board is flipped over to show the names of all those objects to see if they got them right. The next step involves a fishing rod toy with a magnet end and a set of letters where the child fishes for the correct letter that each object begins with. Ms Z had AD say each letter and its corresponding sound. He enjoyed this.

Next he read his book which he was given as homework and he did quite well. It seems to me that books with a lot of repetition really do help. He still does need a lot of help in being able to blend the sounds together to make reading easier. This has been noted and will be a focus to improve on. This session also included practice spelling of three letter words and going through the phonics alphabet checking how he progresses with each sound.

Next week he shall be doing some handwriting and going over his summer homework from school.

UK Riots

I am still in shock regarding the current events gripping the UK. A peaceful protest exploded into a riot in Tottenham, London. The riot turned into looting and as such has spread across London and across the UK. The media are blaming social media platforms such as Twitter Facebook and Blackberry messenger. There is something deeper going on here. This video was brought to my attention which puts an interesting perspective on the whole youth revolt shall we call it( although quite clearly there are middle age people amongst them).

1st Tutoring Session

So my son had his very first 121 tutoring session with Ms Z. She was so so lovely as my friend who suggested her said she would be. My son who I will refer to by his initials so not to confuse with his brother who in a years time enters the school system. So just for clarification AD is the oldest who I am paying for extra 121 tutoring and TJ is his litte brother who is very keen to learn new things as well.

Anyway back to the session. Ms Z began by checking to see what AD had already learned and what he knew already. She went through the phonic sounds singular than double. He was then tested to see if he knew the names of the alphabet from a jumbled up list. He had to state them in order and point to them. He did very well. I cannot remember how many different stages of phonics there are but she said he was at level 3. The next task was spelling three letter words using these letter pebbles that look like giant Smarties. After a bit of research I found that they cost around £12 and are Smart snacks ABC lacing sweets by Learning Resources. From this exercise it was clear that he could spell some basic words but when putting them together he often went for the second letter first. When prompted he managed the correct order.

Final task was reading a level one book from the Oxford Learning Tree. He was asked to describe what was going on in the story from looking at the pictures and then he was given a chance to read the book. For each word he sounded out the letters as the phonics method teaches and then tried to piece the sounds together to get a word. He still needs practice but was able to work through the whole book. He did not stop and tried really hard.

So from this very first session I feel he is going to benefit from it. I went back over the book with him and he is starting to already recognise some words that are new to him and be able to read some of the book. I now understand why these books are written with so much repetition. AD said he enjoyed his session and is happy to have more. I thought 30 minutes would have been too short but it's turning out to be the perfect amount of time.

As you all would have heard by now. Amy Winehouse was found dead at her home. The post mortem has not been completed but people are already speculating that it is related to her choices of recreation. I have read that she had a completed third album ready for release but was delayed by her record company due to her health. Just Wednesday she was on stage with her god-daughter Dionne Bromfield. Such a talented soul. May she rest in peace.

Tutoring

Having done some research and taking tips from other parents. I may delay buying Reading Reflex and concentrate on buying great books with good story lines and animation that I read to my children and they try to read back to me. Dr Seuss does seem to be a favourite amongst many readers. I have a complete set of Oxford Learning Tree books. I will refer to Phonics for Dummies at times as I do have it and may as well make use of it.

My friend put me in touch with her friend who is a teacher. She does 121 tutoring and actually teaches Reception class. It will cost me £15 for an half hour session. During the school holidays I intend to use her expertise once a week and then when he is back at school I may swap to 1hour sessions every other week. I hope by doing so he gets his basic reading level where it needs to be. He is just below the expected target. Now the teacher feels nothing to worry about at this stage however I am choosing not to wait till the end of year 1 before I act.

I laughed out loud when I first watched this clip. However I know most people in my family would be disgusted at her behaviour. Yes she is vex because it seems a bigger lady almost sat on her leg, however this is not the best way to carry herself. She is not even in Yard and a gwan so. Most Jamaicans do not behave this way. Though one thing is for sure. When a Jamaican is cussing woiii dem a cuss hard ta raatid. To be honest it sounds far worst than it really is. Though yes it is still bad.

Update: Having shown this to my husband and some born Jamaican friends. They enlightened me a bit. The lady being cussed out is a grown ass woman. The young lady is clearly being disrespectful. She has issues that need to be dealt with. If she was back home in Jamaica the end result would have been different.

Eyes Lips Face makeup not bad

I had been reading on the beauty blogs about ELF makeup for so long. This year I have indulged three times thanks to their ever so inviting discount codes. My last purchase was a few weeks ago when they offered 50% off. The American site seems to offer this more often than the UK one. I am pretty much happy to buy bargain makeup as long as I have decent base.

I find the eyeshadows have major fallout but because of the price and the pigment in the colours it is a minor issue to me. I love the Lipstick in Fantasy as it is more of real nude lip for my complexion. Not a nude beige (which is not nude to me) but a nude brown. I have not tried the lashes as yet but my co-worker bought loads at the same time. The lip liners I am not sure if I have gotten the right colours but trial and error at £1.50 plus 50% off is not bad. I really do love the Beauty Encyclopaedia Everyday Eyes. Nice neutral colours which are are different to the Urban Decay Naked Palette. Now the Glitz and Glam set I only purchased for the mascara as that was sold out at the time of my purchase. Also I like the eyeshadow brush. My eyelids are not huge so this one makes application easy. I will be investing in more.

The Learned Child

I have decided to create a new blog about the education challenges my son faces. He was slow to speak and I found that after a holiday with his Dad his speech regressed. He has caught up loads and since starting school his vocabulary has grown immensely. Now because of issues with speech, which his new teacher who takes over in September tells me he struggles with the letter T and D. I am not too sure if I get this as I can hear him say words that begin with those letters. However I will see what they do and take it from there.

Over the six weeks school holidays he has homework. I believe it is about 30 minutes of work per week but looks like loads more. The homework covers handwriting, reading and mathematics. This will be fun to work with him. I hope over the next six weeks I can get him reading ready for year 1. I plan to buy a book that has great reviews called Reading Reflex. If you know of any websites that specialise in children’s education please let me know. I believe in him and my abilities to get him where he needs to be.

New Shoes H&M

Over the years I have taken to buying practical shoes. This translates to flat and comfy. I buy heels for days when I am able to get out however I want heels in the week. I am starting off with small heels and that I can drive in then I will move onto the more skyscraper stuff if my toes allow it. I say my toes because usually there is one toe that feels the pain the most.

Anyway whilst shopping for my boys online I saw these and decided to buy two. One in black and the other in coral. They cost £14.99 and I bought them at the reduced price of £7.49. So technically to me I bought one and got one free. I love the little animal print detail on the inside.

Beyonce at Glastonbury

I was not sure what to expect. However I only ever watch bits of Glastonbury festival for artists I like. I do try to branch out, but my core musical tastes are very well set in stone. Glastonbury takes place on a farm in Somerset every year. Where rich and underprivileged folk roll around in mud in the English countryside just to listen to various artists sing over a weekend. Now these tickets cost anywhere from £200 for a basic ticket to £900 for a Tipi. So much money to roll in mud surely a mud spa would be more enjoyable.

Beyonce was made the shows headline and closing act for 2011. Her appearance did not bring the hate that her Husband's appearance did a few years ago. As far as I am concerned she gave a stellar performance. She did old and new songs including a Destiny's Child medley and a few classics from other singers. She even sang Happy Birthday to her friend in the audience. I love the way she bigs up her old bandmates all the time. Just proves girl groups can be friends. The shout outs to Kelly and Michelle came before the DC medleys. Beyonce's performance lasted a very long 1hour and 30minutes. I am not so complaining the length just that I had work the next morning. Song after song kept coming. It made me realise just how much great materials she has. I now wish to see her in concert.

I was on the verge of buying her new album '4', however decided i will wait one more day for the deluxe version. I just cannot but an album twice. Plus the deluxe version just has 3 new tracks and 3 remixes of Run the World.

Oh yeah today at work I overheard two guys talk about how impressed they were with Beyonce's performance in heels and singing and dancing to such a high quality for so long. I agree. Now if only high heels did not hurt my feet so, I would get my dutty wine on but Yard gal style woiii.

I don't want to be a renter no more

It is so frustrating being me sometime. All I want is my own home. I have a roof over my head but I want my own deeds in my name home. I am saving and researching and I am even going so far as looking at homes. You never know my good Lord could bless me with an enablement to get me there. My current home depresses me. I never chose to live here. I feel so restricted.

Anyways I have not got the benefits of parents or family members helping me out. So I might just have to move to another rental to save my sanity. Then take on 3 more jobs but then I would never see my sons. The choice to rent or buy has never been my choice. Why because the only parent I grew up with passed away during my studies. I was immediately thrown into debt and renting. I suppose going self employed will not help.

Do you own your own home? How did you get on this elusive ladder. The UK is fast becoming a nation of renters. The elites have us where they want us. I digress.

Beverley De Gale awarded OBE

I am slightly late posting this but the co-founder of the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust Beverley De Gale has been awarded with an OBE. Congratulations to her and her family and the ACLT that do an amazing job. I am sure her belated son Daniel,who inspired this charity would have been proud. ACLT recently overcame a funding shortfall without government help. So any recognition they receive they have earned it.

I really need to reassess the way I view certain people in my life. Over the last week it has been made very clear to me that some well rather certain people do not have my back at all. How hard is it to be a friend these days? Really! Even so called family. Even non DNA family as in the people who are only family according to law. I just do not know. I am not one for ranting on here but I just have to let off some steam.

I asked for some important information and all I am getting from two people is tumble weed. It tells me all I need to know. I am done trying to be nice. Someone is going to realise the importance of this information in the the next few weeks. You can't choose family but you can definitely choose how you interact with them. If someone really knew about getting facts to match they would act on it quickly. I care enough to blog about it but after this I am done caring, Going to watch from the sidelines. I wonder what would Jesus do huh?

I need to stay either out of town or just not go to Boots. I thought those empty shelves would be clear by now but it seems they still do have a few bits and pieces they are still trying to clear. So I splurged again. I do not know where my receipt is but all items were about 75% off in Boots. I have browsed their website and they have some products but many sold out too. I do find it amazing how at the start of any relationship things start off a bit rocky. A colleague at work and I used to knock heads a lot at the beginning. It turns out that we do have much in common and the differences are well just differences. Anyway, I have never been to Cornwall. I am told it's beautiful there and you can get authentic things such as cornish pasties and various other things.

I had the pleasure to be given from my workmate a selection of Trenance Chocolate all the way from Cornwall. She was so thoughtful to get the boys chocolate lollipops with the cartoon faces.The remainder two bars was for me to share with hubby. He does not eat treats that often so I decided I would enjoy them myself. Yummy they are gorgeous. Not too heavy and just smooth. The white chocolate was amazing. I might visit Cornwall one day just to get more.

Kelly Rowland X-Factor judge UK

Yay, I am so happy that the X-Factor has a new line up. Many people were getting a bit bored of the mediocre talents judging others. I am dissapointed that Simon Cowell has gone though but he was losing his touch some what. Maybe his fire will be re-ignited in the USA. But that is showbiz huh. I am so going to make sure I watch the show especially as one of my favourite singers is now on the show Ms Kelly Rowland. Filmed auditions started today and doesn't she look lovely. Tulisa is in a successful group so it will be interesting to see what she is like. Gary Barlow is a semi veteran and writes songs for his own group Take That and other singers including himself so I cant complain about his choice. I just pray that Louis does not get the groups again. We are still suffering the sight of Jedward. Though he gets a slight pass for helping JLS. They are corny but make music pleasant enough to enjoy. If I know you and you are entering this major competition I wish you every success.

Should we care for Ben

Ben Douglas has written an article in the Daily Mail, to express his disgust at being called the N-word. But should we as a Black community care about his feelings when he mocks us on radio and TV. He fails to realise that the stereotypes he throws at his own people are the same ones people throw his way. His appearance on The Big Question was so shocking. He looked so flabbergasted when Precious Williams (whose book I must read one day which is titled Precious) discussed the cultural and identity problems she developed in her mixed adoption. In her case it was not that her parents could not look after her, the judge dismissed them as they were black. Now Ben was not having this and he basically tried to say her experience was rare, yet Dr Derrick Campbell who was a guest on the panel who works with people who suffer the fallout from being disconnected from their culture agreed with Precious. He called Ben out for his remarks on Radio 4 where he likened people from his birth place as dressed in tribal gear running around an open top fire. How can any Black person be taking seriously with remarks like that.

So when his latest article in the DM appears where he is disgusted at being lauded by his preferred peers with a racial slur (which it must be noted is not used as a term of endearment by all Black people) he comes crying that he was racially abused. I think Ben was shocked because he disassociates himself from Black culture and he readily accepts the white English culture that he was raised in.

What does he mean by "I'm from Surrey not Harlem". Is he trying to say that it is okay to be called the N-word if you are from Harlem and all the other cities he named? Is he calling all rappers gangsters? He throws around the fact that he works in theatre as if to say that makes him special. Well Ben you should know many Black people work in theatre and attend theatre shows. It is fine if you do not want to be seen as a Black British man but just an English man of no specific race. I just hope you see that the racial stereotypes you often throw at other Black people are the same stereotypes your preferred peers will and have thrown your way.

I doubt you will be humbled by this. I bet Brian Belo is more culturally aware than you. I just cant sympathise with or for you. I hope the DM and its readers gives you sympathy you want. But I doubt you care about what I think. Right now I just cannot take this man seriously.

Aww this fills me with joy to watch. A young lady that I know entered a dancing contest and won. Dancing is definitely in her blood and football too. Chantelle Richards took part in the Schwarzkopf Live competition which was hosted by rapper Rukus and singer Kele le Roc. The event ended just under a month ago. She now performs as part of Atti2ude a street dance crew whose mentor is Sisco Gomez. Above is the first group video and below is Chantelle story. I am so not a beauty blogger. Just an enthusiast who loves makeup and a good bargain. Today after church I was in town with my sons as they had a date with the Build a Bear store. The oldest had been asking consistently for two weeks for a monkey from there. These bears are not cheap so I am glad I was not the one to buy both bears.

Anyway I had been running low on eye makeup remover and headed over to Boots. They have 3 for 2 offer on skincare type products. Had it been a buy 1 get 1 free I would have indulged. 3 for 2 offers cost you more money in the long run especially if your intention like mine was just to buy one product. Thankfully I told myself I have plenty of face washes and just needed the Simple Eye Makeup remover. I do not usually buy the same one as I will buy what is on offer.

So as I am browsing Boots wondering where the heck the Urban Decay stand has vanished too. I am not pleased with this as I have a planned purchase for the UD Roller girl palette with my Boots points. So as I am swirling round the endless makeup shelves with Build a Bear boxes in hand and my mini me's following suit I spot 75% off on the Ruby and Millie stand. Then I remembered the post I read months ago on Lipglossiping which spoke of the brand being discontinued. I always thought of them being too high in price for High street but they were ok. I only ever really used their twisting up lipgloss but a lid broke and it became a love hate relationship

This is what I bought and yet I was only supposed to spend £10 give or take £1 in Boots.

Borghese Makeup Brushes

Thanks to the many beauty blogger blogs and YouTubers I have developed a love of makeup. I also would love to one day make regular videos on YouTube. I have a camcorder although not HD, but its okay for me. Oh and I do have a new digital camera. It was much needed. The video below was made using my Sony Cybershot digital camera, lighting is not perfect but I wanted to do video showing the brushes instead of loads of pictures. I have been unable to do another video as my kids are always awake and love the camera spotlight.

Anyway over Easter holidays I went into Costco and saw that they had row taller than me (well most things are) of their new Makeup brush set. I thought price looks nice, but I was shopping for my sons christening. So when I came home and got on twitter and mentioned my find. So when Vexinthecity tweeted her surprise they were now available in the UK and a bargain, I thought to myself maybe I ought to go back and buy them. After all I was going to the M.A.C. counter in Birmingham to treat myself to a new foundation.

Anyway after watching a few reviews on the tube I went back to Costco and bought myself these brushes. I paid £19.84 which included V.A.T. The cashier admired my purchase and told me she bought some before and loved them. I went back last week and could not see any of the brushes for sale. They seem to sell out quick.

I have been using these brushes for a couple of weeks and I do love them. This is the second set of brushes I have purchase from costco. The Powder Kabuki brush is amazing. I use it for my finishing powders like the m.a.c. skin finish mineralizer. My first few uses I got a few shed hairs but that has seemed to have calmed down. I also love the Foundation brush. It is not the usual flat smooth brush. This one is round. What I am finding is that because of this it is so easy to end up with loads of product so I have to use less of the liquid foundation. The box states you can use it for liquid cream or powder foundations.

For the first time I have a concealer and have made use of the concealer brush. It's okay. I am not sure what I am supposed to look for in a concealer brush so for now it does the job. I tried to use the Angled eyed contour brush but my technique was poor. Please give me some tips. Those are the only brushes I have used. Feel free to give me some tips or ideas for the others.

Eyebrows ruined and restored

Whilst getting ready to go out last night and eager to do my makeup, I thought i would shape my eyebrows myself. Usually my husband takes a fresh razor and gives them a nice shape. He usually refuses to let me tell him how to shape them. Well as he was not in yet I figured I would use my bikini trimmer, which I never use for the bikini area and shape my brows myself.

I was not being as careful as I should be and ended up having one shapely brow and and one shaven off. Thankfully I have the E.L.F. eyebrow kit and loads of kohl pencils. I drew it back on the best I could. Now I know the end result does not look as perfect as some of the ladies I see on YouTube but in the dark no one could tell. I have learned my lesson. However I do want to be able to shape my brows myself so may have to watch some more tutorials. In the meantime, I will have to draw on my brow until the hair grows back.

Princess Diana would have been so proud of this day. As the world already knows Prince William took Catherine Middletons hand in holy matrimony. The service was very nice and even better was a church wedding. Their official titles are now Prince William Duke of Cambridge and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge. This is the short version as whilst watching telly I did hear a very long title. God bless their union.

Oh whilst service was going on my friends on BBM and folk on twitter noticed the 2 Black choir boys. My friend even paused the TV just to take a picture. Their parents must be so proud of them.

The whole situation with Spike Lee constantly calling Tyler Perry's work bafoonery is age old. I think it stems from the fact that both post slavery and post colonialism people of African descent were ridiculed in all forms of acceptable public entertainment. You had the blackface white teeth red big lips and watermelon. The golliwog dolls which still exist today and whose owners defend it. Robertson's Jam only retired their golly pictures in 2002 which they said, was due to lack of popularity and not due to political or social criticism. It always put me off buying their products.

Spike Lee has made some truly amazing films and Bamboozled is one of them. Except I fail to see where Tyler Perry is bamboozling us. My uncle used to to say the same thing about the show My Wife and Kids. He just could not take a show seriously were we mocked ourselves. This issue is definitely a community one that crosses borders and will divide people.

I personally enjoy films by both director/actors. Perry's film tend to have a Christian message in them too which is a bonus. I just wish Tyler Perry films were more accessible in the UK. After all have you seen what the community is thrown out of the woodworks lately. So Spike if you want to complain come to the UK.

Tyler Perry will keep making films and TV shows for what his audience want to see. If any director does not like what is on offer they should make the alternative. If I had the resources I would make some truly amazing films based in Jamaica and the UK. In the meantime I will make do with what is on offer and if I do not like it I will not watch it. Primark Sunglasses Haul

Across England the weather has been really good over the past few days and today was a mini heatwave. It is unusually warm and dry for April but I am not complaining. This brown skin sister really needs some sun in her skin. So today I left the car at home and took the bus into town so I could soak up as much sun as possible.

Primark was heaving with people. The escalators were always full and the queues for the cashiers were ever long. Luckily they moved swiftly. I went there looking for some nice T-shirts and ended up also buying a handful of stunnas. Oh and my sons wanted some too.

Well anyone who follows Dancehall music knew this was on its way. Vybz Kartel appearing lately in many shades lighter than what he was when he emerged as an artist worth a listen. He is very candid about his skin bleaching and compares it to sun tanning. Though he may have a point the effects are not the same and both detrimental health. Plus one has a far more negative message considering the history of the people.

In true form Dancehall artists have been making songs either in support or against this. Mr Vegas latest offering is pretty much to the point, no mincing words. Black and Proud. Like James Brown many years before him, Mr Vegas is keen to let you know that he is Black and proud and loves the skin he is in. So do I.

Casey speaks about the bullying

So over the past few days I have seen countless videos and discussions about a young man who was being bullied at school. In the original video a group of boys gathers with camera in hand whilst their friend subjects Casey to punches to the face and abdomen. In a twist of fate the victim turns on his bully lifts him up in the air and body slams down on the concrete floor. The bully gets up in pain limping. As a result the school suspended both boys due to their no fighting policy. However what I would like to know is why they failed to address the bullying that had been occurring on a daily basis. Had Casey not switched on his tormentors the school would have continued to turn a blind eye. Schools have to be pro-active in bullying. Recognise that it is happening and do something about it.

Loving my Kindle

I received a Kindle this past Christmas as a gift. It came after the holidays due to the high demand at the time. I was so happy I got it and spent an hour getting to know it. I even called the folk at Amazon just to make sure my Wi-Fi was set up correctly. For detailed information of the Kindle please check out the Amazon Kindle page.

Apparently I love gadgets so I went for the Kindle with free 3G and Wi-Fi. It cost at the time £149 (now due to the hefty VAT increase it costs £152) and this version means in about 100 countries you can download books on the go. When I think about it. I did not really need the extra spend, but hey.

The digital display uses a technology called E-ink pearl, which makes it look like the text in an actual book. You do not get any glare. The only downside is that there is no optional light for when you need it. Though there are cases with lights and clip on lights if you needed it. I have not bought any of those.

I find it so easy to use, switching between books without losing my page. There was a recent update so now you get to see the page numbers. So I am really happy about that. One thing I have neglected to take advantage of are the free books. These can be found listed in the forums or simply by checking out the Kindle bestsellers list. Some of the free books I have are , Instant MBA by Nicholas Beaton and The Book of Household Management by Mrs Isabella Mary Beeton. I have also bought Alan Sugar's biography. I like the fact that for days when my pockets are thin I can just download a freebie to bide my time till I feel flush again.

I prefer to use the Kindle for novels and hefty reads. Less likely to use it for a cookbook as essentially it is grey scale black and white. I was against e-readers for a long time but now since I own one and use it, I love them. It is weighted like a book and with the leather cover I got from eBay for it that cost £8.99 I cannot complain.

Oh yes I can. The screen savers are randomly generated authors and art and things like that. I am not a fan of most of those literary greats so it does nothing for me. Now if it were possible to dictate what the screen savers show, so that it was pictures of my choosing than I would be happy. Using Facebook on this is ok but the web toolkit is not quite ready for full on browsing. There is supposed to be an option to tweet bits from what you are reading but as my mobile tweets and pc/laptop its neither here nor there for me.

Great device. Prices of books not as cheap as I would expect due to publishers greed. However bargains are out there if you dedicate some time for it.

Beenie Man - Time of my life

I am always skeptical when people take a classic such as the anthem to Dirty Dancing , Time of my Life. The Black Eye Peas did a cover sample which at first I did not like, but it grew on me. Now I am hearing popular Dancehall Reggae DJ Beenie Man has his own version too. Beenie Man who has reconciled his relationship with his wife who is also a Dancehall artist has infused lyrics of love for his wife. I actually love this Beenie man and friends riddim. This song is so lovely.

Gifts from work for 5yr service

I have been at my current job for 5 whole years. It has been a love hate relationship. Only because I took the job when made redundant on maternity leave over 5 years ago. It is a job at the end of the day and my bills get paid bit by bit. So for 5 years service you are given 500 points to spend in a catalogue which equates to about £50. You can buy more points if you choose but I decided it was not worth me doing so.

I chose these cute little Le Creuset soup bowls that come with lids. I have 2 pairs but no idea what or how to use them. When we have soup in my family we a need a big bowl as Jamaican soup is a hearty meal that is filling to the core filled with dumplings yams green banana etc etc. Well I might discover something for them in the future. Any ideas please let me know.

Oh I also chose this Elemis facial gift set that comes with skin peel and cream mask. I was disappointed at the size as they are small travel sizes. Though as I did not pay for them I suppose I cannot complain. I have yet to try these products on my face.

Trinity Warriors - Got to Dance

Derby gave us the Trinity Band and now you have Trinity Warriors a B-Boy dance crew. They are currently taking part in the Sky 1 show Got to Dance. They have made it to the finals. After watching them I think I need to get my sons learning some moves.

The Blessing and Curse of the Hottentot legacy

When Europeans invaded Africa for their selfish gains and general curiosity they encountered a people who contrary to popular belief were well fed in some parts. Their body shapes were somewhat different to what the explorers imagined. Traditional European women shapes came with little to no curves in comparison. Their curves were achieved by slipping into tight breath taking corsets that pushed the breasts upwards under the chin and squeezed the waist in. This gave the impression that the ladies who wore this style of dress had a tiny waist with womanly curves.

Sara Baartman hailed from the Khoi Khoi tribe in what is currently called South Africa. She was taken from Africa and paraded around Europe during the 19th century as part of a freak show. She was referred to as the Hottentot Venus. Her people were referenced with the name Hottentot however the correct name is Khoi Khoi. Venus completed her show piece show name in reference to greek goddess of love. The crowds were in awe of her large derriere and gawped at her genitalia. When she passed away a revered European scientist dissected her body and put her private parts along with various body parts on show. In 2002 her remains were given to South Africa and given a proper burial.

Fast forward to 2011. Women of African descent are dotted all over the globe. Come in all different shapes and sizes. The general consensus is that to be a Black woman means you automatically have curves. We get ridiculed for having a big bum or big boobs. Yet when we are lacking in these things we are ridiculed. I have heard so many non Black folk complain about Beyonce's shape yet get happy for Jennifer Lopez. I never thought of Jennifer having much of a bum to get hyped up about to be honest. She just had an "acceptable" shape.

In recent years the emergence of HipHop video vixens has had a major influence on the size of some women's bum. Some celebrities are known to wear butt pads to fill them out whilst some have resorted to illegal cosmetic treatments. It is highly speculated that Nicki Minaj's bum is not really hers. You know the paparazzi will be on the look out when she hits the beach. Kim Kardashian is a non Black celeb who is known for her bum as much as her sex tape. Bums have remained part of the European obsession.

The irony is that now you have young girls who already have shapely figures seeking to enhance what they have. This week emerged a story of a young British Black woman who travelled to America for an illegal back door silicone injection in the bum. Her aim in life was to be a video vixen in American Hip Hop videos. Based on the imagery and what she supposedly was told, she needed a very curvaceous bum. That silicone injection that was to lead to fortune and fame killed her shortly after.

So when you look back at the over sexualisation of Hottentot and the legacy it left behind. Black women having huge bums and breasts are in one hand ridiculed and in the other lauded as sexual goddesses. I have been told on many occasions by white work colleagues that I have a "Black girls bum" and whether or not I can move my bum as they do in the videos.

The blessing is that Black women's natural shape (various of course) are generally accepted as the norm. The curse is for those who do not fill a stereotype are now going after a very much sexualised image that can only be linked back to Hottentot. The saddest part of this it is being fuelled this time both internally and externally.

I really like the pictures I have seen of Amber Riley lately. She looks gorgeous and fashionable and has such a radiant smile. Of course she is a curvy sister. It is a shame that in the UK to be a star you have to be near anorexic to be taken seriously. The papers say things have changed and are changing. Though I only see the same person on TV everyday unless it is a foreign star. Such a shame.

My Birthday look

I know I hardly ever show my face on my blog. But as I was so happy with my Birthday look this past weekend I felt good enough to share. My Birthday was last week and I am grateful to God for allowing me to see another year. I hope and pray I finally get fit though.

Anyway this is me sipping on a Singapore Sling. If it was not my birthday I doubt I would have spent £7 on one drink. It was absolutely gorgeous and really just tasted like pop so I downed that in no time. For my makeup I am wearing Urban Decay Naked palette, Sleek blusher in Sahara and Mac lipstick called Up the Amp. After consulting the lovely beauty bloggers on twitter @JennMUA @Vexinthecity @MissVirtue I settled on a brown bronzy smoked eye. When I tried on the lipstick in the shop it made me look like I had clown lips, but I bought it anyway as I have wanted this shade for a very long time. Plus beauty bloggers and general beauty enthusiasts assured me I would look good with it.

Singapore Sling Cocktail

There is no local Mac store or counter where I live, so I have to travel to Nottingham, Birmingham or Leicester. Nottingham being the closest I went there this time and I was very disappointed with the service. To think it was my birthday week and I had money to spend but the sales ladies were useless.

One more thing I have long stopped wearing dresses by themselves. I always opt for a dress that would look nice with leggings. However I thought I would be daring and just try something different. I wore a one armed black dress. The armed side was chiffon and the cuffs were covered in jewels. So on my bare arm I wore a bracelet that had matching bling. I have body issues which meant although I let the leggings go. I still opted for a pair of tights.

Thai Dusit - Thai Fish Cakes starter

As my birthday fell in the week I went for a meal on Saturday at a restaurant called Thai Dusit. The food was lovely. It is a pity some friends let me down at the last minute. Though overall I had a good time and met up with other friends whose birthdays also fall in January.

Earrings and Makeup bargains

I was so excited about my L'Oreal bargains in the Poundland I forgot to blog about them. I tweeted about them instead. No time like right now huh. I picked up these three Color mineral eyeshadows and one Khõl mineral for £1 each at my local Poundland. They were bought during the recent Christmas holidays. I think they are so cute with the little brushes. I have only used one shade so far. I might play in my makeup to try a look very soon with these.

These earrings I picked up in the George section of Asda when I was supposed to be doing food shopping. So for me it is better I shop online for Asda. Only thing is, you cannot shop for food and clothes online at the same time. I might wear the heart earrings for my birthday meal next week. No idea when I will wear the yellow thread earrings but I so do love them.

My Curls Products

I was given the opportunity to try a new UK based natural hair product range. The company is called My Curls.

The Cleansing cream is a very nice shampoo that comes filled with Aloe Vera, Panthenol and oils from sunflower, lemon and tea tree. I am not the best with scents but it smells pleasant and is not over bearing. I found this product very easy to use and wash out. My hair felt clean after use. The Curl Smoothie is a moisturiser which also contains many natural ingredients which are all listed on the My Curls website. I found this product very good for blow drying my hair. The glycerine makes it harder for the product to absorb in my hair as do other glycerine based or ingredient content products. I liked how my hair felt after it was blow dried using the Curl smoothie.

Overall I would say My Curls have the beginning of a very good product line. My Curls also do a conditioner called Coco Curly Conditioner. All three current products are now priced at £10.25 and can be purchased from their online shop.

Frugal shopping

I was browsing WorldStar Hip Hop and saw this video. This lady saved $230(£144) in grocery shopping with a smart collection of coupons and store loyalty rewards. Not to mention the money back for using her own bags. I wish coupons were more readily available in the UK. I could do with saving on my weekly shopping and things in general. I have a Boots, Sainsbury's and Tesco card but they are loyalty based. If only Asda offered one. Rocket Dogs water damage rescue

Over the last few months we have experienced cold like we have never known. Well we have known it years ago but it caused the whole country to shut down. Pathetic right? So to cope with the snow I bought myself two pairs of boots. My favourite boots from last year from Evans were not being sold this year and the alternative was of no use to me. My other choices would have been a nice dress boots or some furry boots.

Brand new Rocket Dog Boots

Ugg boots are very comfortable and very expensive, so I sought an alternative. I bought the Rocket Dog Slush Puppy suede ankle boot. It cost me at the time £35 with my discount though having browsed the same catalogue the price is cheaper now (*shrugs*). The heel part is quite stiff and took me ages to push my feet in for the first time. After that it was easy. It fits comfortable and was okay to drive in.

I first wore these in the snow to help me with my balance and it served its purpose. I have also worn them in the rain for a short while. However last week we had a sudden snow slush rain fall. Yep all three elements fell in that order in one day. The slush meant my beloved boots got wet through. I could not understand why they would not dry. However realised the water spread through the fibres and caused a big ole stain.

Water damaged

My friends on FB suggested I bin them, whilst one friend suggested I put them in the washing machine. Although that idea seemed like mmm maybe it would work, I felt it would make the fur lining hard and uncomfortable. In the end I googled away and many sites suggested wetting the whole boot. So I got my spray bottle and sprayed water all over the outside and then took and old toothbrush and brushed away to keep the suede looking fresh.

Rejuvenated boots

In the morning I looked at my boots and they looked decent enough to wear. You can still see there is water damage but it is no longer blatantly noticeable. I will ensure I have suede spray at hand as I do have some lovely boots from Dulcis years ago that are suede and will definitely benefit from the suede spray protection.

ACLT urgently needs your help

The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust is in crisis. This is due to a sudden drop in funding. They have begun a fundraising campaign to keep the Trust going for a temporary period in the hope they can secure more long term funding. ACLT was born out of the need for a bone marrow donor for the late Daniel De Gale. It grew to bring awareness to all and encouraged people of ethnic backgrounds to register as well as finding those vital matches.

Please if you can make a donation and spread the word. They need to raise £80k by March 2011 to keep afloat till September 2011. They also need long term funding. The following is taken from the website.

So many stories of birds dropping out of the sky dead and millions of fish washing up dead in sea. My friend tells me I need to read my Bible for the answers which I will. However on some sites I read they have said it could be a sign of chemical trials. The excuse of fireworks does not sound feasible to me.

Just makes you wonder what is going on in the world. Last year it was the earthquakes now this.

I have been quite busily trying to do a last minute essay of just over 2,000 words. This is because I have yet to master the art of doing instead of thinking. Hopefully I can start off on a better footing. I will not be making any New Years resolutions. I never stick to them. Instead I plan to continually make certain changes in my life on an on-going basis. I have failed to conquer my weight, however I have not given up. I actually do not like looking at myself in pictures when it is a full body shot.

My boobs are huge and I just look odd to me. All my friends are kind and say that I have shape and a nice figure etc. Though when you yourself are not happy something has to be done. I used to wake up each morning just to put eyeshadow on. I did this even before an exam back in my uni days. One thing for sure I will take care of me better. I will be reading more inspirational and spiritual books. So if you know of any good ones let me know.

I must improve on my procrastination. I should have read this book at the beginning of the year and not just recently. I mentioned this book back in January. To this day I still love the way the book has been marketed with the pictures. So I would say it is definitely worth checking out the Facebook page and website to see how far this book has travelled and the beautiful pictures.

I Am is one of those books that makes you wonder what exactly is going on and where will it lead me to. When I opened the book to quickly browse I was like who scribbled in my book. Though when I read the book it all made sense. Oh and I have never seen so many thank you’s in an acknowledgement section of a book.

The book takes you on a journey starting from 1979 when he was born. Then cascades its way to the emotions involved with his first love. You do not often hear about a mans emotions when it comes to abortion. So this is quite insightful on how it can affect them. There are also references to the New Years eve killings of the cousins in Birmingham and the London bombings.

You are taking completely on a journey in the author's mind exposed to his thoughts through key events. A mixture of poetry prose and storytelling wrapped up in one book. The scribbles only make sense if you read the book. I was going to re-cap everything in the book but I feel that would spoil it for the reader.

I read this book in less than 2 hours. I was that engrossed. Its part to do with how the book is written and how it has been presented. Since reading this book I have questioned some of the things that make me who I AM. I feel inspired!

Wonders never cease...

At work today a colleague says to me, as I am getting ready to leave that I look like the Black girl from Glee actress Amber Riley who plays Mercedes Jones. In my head I am thinking are you serious! Yet without thinking out of my mouth flows "What, because we both fat and black????" If you could have seen their faces. Another colleague with mouth to the floor says "did you say what I think you said?". Yes I did. Sometimes you have to shock their ignorance with the truth. The stuff I am told daily in their presence just makes me want to kiss my teeth all day long.

If you have ever met me and know me you know they were talking bull. At work someone even said I resembled Floella Benjamnin. So I do wonder when I finally win the battle with weight who I will be compared too. Mmmm maybe Beyonce or Selita Ebanks or VV Brown as she is in the M&S adverts. No regards for height build and actual likeness.

The only person who said the decent thing was - we look alike on a dark night with your eyes closed. I just really give up sometime.

Google honours Rosa Parks

Fifty-five years ago, the late Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white person. She was subsequently arrested and put in Jail. Google have remembered this day with a Google Doodle illustration. This is not on the Google UK version but on Google USA.

As a result the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott took place and lasted for about 381 days. This one act alone pushed the Civil Rights Movement into full force.

School Dinners Dilemma

My son has is almost halfway through his 1st year at school. Primary school seems to be the best place for him as he has grown and matured so much. He wakes up on the weekend asking if he is going to school. So to my surprise one day last week I was taken aside by the head dinner lady who was concerned. She advised me that he has not been eating his school dinners for the past 2 days.

My husband asked him why he was not eating the food and he said he did not like it. I asked what the food on offer was and was told sausages mash and vegetables. No wonder my son is refusing to eat the stuff. Luckily I have gotten a menu from the school and can see why sometime he does not like what is on offer.

The food served at the school is pretty much standard English foods. Some of which are very nice. They typically offer some Indian dishes too and each day there is a vegetarian option. At home my family eat traditional Jamaican foods.

I just do not know what is best to do. I have bought a lunch bag for my son just in case we have to change to packed lunches. Though I am so reluctant to switch as the English winter is brutally cold and I just want my son to have a hot meal in the day. What would you do?

Sleek Good and Bad girl palettes

I heard about these palettes from my favourite beauty bloggers and some new ones I never knew of. Not to mention Sleeks marketing team that make good use of twitter. When I first saw the palettes I was unsure if i would purchase both. I tweet often when a new palette comes out that i do not need it.

The Bad Girl palette reminds me of the Smokey Eye palette. The colours are different but not so different that it was a must buy. The Good Girl palette is the most original for me. Just full of pretty varying shades of pinks, corals and light reds. It is missing a truly darker contouring shade but not really missed. Especially if like me you most of the palettes Sleek have released.

I have worn looks from both palettes to work and got compliments all day long. When I wear shades from Bad girl many colleagues ask me if I am going on a date after work with hubby. Whilst Good girl tends to bring compliments on how vivid the colour shows up. Both palettes are packed full of pigment and worth every penny.

I would have waited until the 50% one day sale Sleek Makeup are having on the 11th November but I just know the website will crash. Sleek have some serious stan fans of their products. I will just wait for the natural/nude palette that via twitter they told me will be out soon.

Primark is Primark

During my short stay in London I visited Primark in Oxford Circus. I can still remember on the news the madness that went on when this store opened. People got hurt as it was a stampede to grab a bargain. My cousin always tells me it is worth visiting different Primark stores in different areas. As with some chain stores, the contents can always vary and you never know what you may find.

I spotted these beautiful court shoes with the perfect heel for me. The colour I wanted was mink, but at £5 I figured I could make it work. Although I still do want a pair of mink heels now. My friend has pre-warned me that the part of the show that is at the top of the toes is quite stiff so feet may take a few wears to adjust to it.

I was not blown away by the Oxford Circus branch. Though it was nice to be in there. I have been to many Primark stores across the midlands and London. They are always full of people and can be very cramped at times. I just did not understand why after shopping in the Oxford Circus branch people are sat outside Primark on the windowsill looking admiringly at their purchases. Could they not wait till they got home or to their hotel rooms to do that.

Bravissimo Bra heaven

I have been a Bravissimo shopper since I was at university. I am a person who always has difficulty finding bras that fit or more importantly come in my cup size. There was a time when some shops only extended their cup range to a D cup bra. I in those days discovered I had long outgrown my D cups and was in fact a 34G. Yikes!!!

A few years and body changes a bit of extra fat (thank you children and my stationary job), I began to realise that my bossom having also been a 36HH was no longer receiving the support it needs. The extra weight meant I was squeezing in. I did increase my back size to 38 to no avail. I have many friends whose chests are plentiful with back sizes ranging from 28 upwards who always looked well supported. I just assumed my bras were worn and continue buying the same size. When I eventually lose my extra fat I will need to have a re-fitting.

Anyway during my trip to my hometown London I used a day trip with one of my good friends to visit Bravissimo in Oxford Circus. I had previously been to the Nottingham store so had an idea of what to expect. Inside is gorgeous and very cosy. The staff were all friendly, even the ones not serving you greeted you with a smile. Downstairs I booked a fitting and chilled on the comfy sofas.

The fate of many of my bras!!

My fitter for the day was Jade, a very tall lady. Well everyone is taller than me. She was very nice and pleasant and explained how the fitting would go. Bravissimo do not use any measuring tapes. They use your current bra as a guide and assess fitting and cup based on that. Bravissimo ensure you fit in the bra and that you are not falling out at the sides or underneath etc. Some women like moi often find that they need a bigger cup size and not necessarily a bigger back size. Some find they need a smaller back size altogether. I overheard a woman in the next changing room find out she was a 28HH. Now that is some front huh.

My fitter supplied a handful of bras with various styles and explained how she felt they would fit. She even knew which bras tended to come small or larger and how they tend to fit. I was relieved to find out that it was not my plumpness that caused the bones in the bra to poke me in my armpit but simply it was the wrong bra for me. I was told that as my bossom is full in the centre (no gap), it would be hard to find a bra where the bone sits flat agains the chest bone. Once it was agreed my correct size(s) I was left to try on at will. So now I know I cant put on anymore weight as I am now a 38J/JJ. During my last pregnancy I was a 36K so I shudder to think about it too much. I have been to places that sell bras and use tape measures in the past. One made me feel almost like a freak as the lady more or less told me to leave as they did not cater for me.

I now tend to buy half of the bras I buy from Bravissimo. I can not fault them. The in-store experience is well worth it as is the discussion you have on the phone. I have yet to shop online but I would assume you would enjoy it none the less. Now I am waiting for the next sale. When your chest is ample you simply have no where to get a bargain bra. I can only dream of finding a £10 bra one day in my size.

R.I.P. Gregory Isaacs

The legendary Reggae singer Gregory Isaacs (19 July 1951- 25 October 2010) has passed away. He had ben battling lung cancer for sometime. During his career he had released 100s of albums. One of his most famous songs was Night Nurse which is still popular today.

France limits and blocks sales on ebay

Over the last few weeks I have been doing my usual browsing of makeup clothes handbags, wigs, hair products and possible mac accessories. So as I notice an instant weave brand new selling at a reasonable price that not even the likes of Pak stores can match I figured I would take a closer look. Only to get this big ol' red and white notice.

So there is a law in Paris, France that stops certain products being sold on ebay from France even if it is authentic. I heard a couple of years ago that French customs would now check for fake designer goods with tourist so they could prosecute the tourist and not the source. Well it can only be why and the integrity (what) of the said brands.

I am probably really late but what I have managed to find out is that in June 2008 Ebay was served a fine of £31.6m for not preventing the sale of counterfeit goods belonging to the LVMH group which includes Louis Vuiiton, Christian Dior and Givenchy. This covers handbags, perfumes and clothes and whatever else they produce. The law is a sweeping one so even if the seller is legitimate the law affects them too. Ebay of course where not happy and at the time said :

"Today’s ruling is about an attempt by LVMH to protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice and the livelihood of law-abiding sellers that eBay empowers everyday." (source)

Are these brands wrong in wanting to be selective as to who sells their products, as this effects authentic goods too? Or are they simply protecting their brand identity by deciding who is worthy of selling their products. It reminds me about the Levi Jeans Saga years ago with Tesco. They were able to locate an authentic distributor to buy in bulk and cheap and sell to their customers at a lower price. Levi Strauss was not happy and took Tesco to court as they did not like their clothes being sold next to produce.

The ruling has been upheld after Ebay appealed Having read this press release which contains info about the LVHM group, not only is it clear to me where they want to sell their products too but also to whom. It is unfortunate their ruling also has an affect on other brands who are not as selective as they are. The ebay forums are full of people asking why the Paris law effects something as trivial as conditioner.

Having delved deeper and explored the forums I found that I could view the products I wanted but by not using Opera and had to use a different browser. Well at least I learned something new today.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

I bought this book on a whim. I saw it in Sainsbury’s one morning on my way to work and thought it looked like a book I could read and finish. Even better the man from the Book People was at work the same day with this book for sale. He told me how good the book was.

The story is set in the 1960’s Mississippi and focuses on mainly 2 maids and a young lady raised by a maid. Abileene is definitely the mother hen of the bunch very wise and full of sense. Whilst dealing with the lost of her son she is raising the children of her employer. Minny on the other hand comes from an abusive marriage but always talks herself out of a job by being honest which is more than what the privileged white ladies can handle. Not even her good cooking can save her at times.

This book journeys you through the maids experiences and what they go through. Whilst sharing the knowledge that some kids who grow up such as Skeeter still have a warm affection for the maid who raised them. Yet tries to make sense of why they may no longer be around. The books touches somewhat on the impending civil rights movement and the sense of change that is about to come. However the main focus is the quiet friendship and understanding these ladies share. Though most importantly an inside into the often forgotten but much used Help.

X Factor adverts were groovy

Well what can I say. X Factor was okay last night the only act that was truly amazing was Mary Byrne. TreyC was good too. Though if she does not do well on this show she can become the new poster lady for a taught bumper. I can just imagine her being snapped on the beach and people in awe of her derriere the way they are with Serena. Thankfully she has an absolute good voice.

Cher did what I expected she threw in some Lady Sovereign ala N Dubz vibes to a song that did not need it. In fact she was awful and did not prove anything. Katie was better than Cher but the gaga like get up was badly done.

Anyway the highlight for me from Xfactor was the commercials. I actually enjoyed watching them. The best had to be the Yeo Valley farm milk advert. Now I need to go and find out what a massey is. The rapping in this advert was on point and Cher could learn a thing or two from it. I also liked the Ikea Kitchen advert which was so groovy. Now if the judges could choose a decent song for their acts I might think the same of them too.

One more thing why have wildcards, than do a double eviction on the 1st show. It makes no sense. The twist is stupid and people worked that out the day Gamu got the boot.

Jeremy Kyle you brute

This is so funny. I knew this would happen to him to him one day. Of course violence is not the answer. However Mr Kyle attacks his guest with an air of self righteousness that was bound to get him in trouble. You know Mr Kyle would never have approached that man in the street like that. Black History UK

October marks the month of awareness for Black History in the UK. Many people fight against this month whilst forgetting that the UK history books are filled with purposely left out events. Not many schools in the UK teach anything about Slavery, African dynasties or the civil rights movement in the USA. I am pro Black History and anything that encourages people to spend time to get to know it, is alright with me.

African history pre-dates slavery. It is this history that is often neglected. Have you seen the hieroglyphics. This part of ancient history people often gloss over the fact that Africans of dark complexions and features were around and doing great things. You just cannot settle for what people tell you. In the UK Black British history usually stops at Mary Seacole and the Windrush era. Yet Olaudah Equiano was a 18th century writer and anti-slavery campaigner and Cornelius is said to be the 1st recorded African in London whose time dates back to 1593. Even back then racism was around as Queen Elizabeth banished Africans and Black moors from England. Yet a century later they wanted to know Africans for their own material gain.

No harm in learning your history. Especially when you already know everyone else's.

Whilst looking for song lyrics to my new favourite song I came across this website Urban Islands. It looks like a nice caribbean website which I will continue to explore. However what caught my attention was this video below they posted. It shows a new South American dance craze by the young folk there. It contains a lot of gyrating and pelvic to pelvic thrusting. I kid you not. For a second I thought it was a Reggaeton thing so maybe a bit of dancehall dancing with a south American twist. Mmm I just don’t know. I do know that in the Caribbean you would not see a popular dance that involves a man bumping his head against a girls bum. Anyway its quite energetic yet its quite mild to the Passa Passa videos I have seen. What are your thoughts?

1 - What or who inspired you to become a DJ?
I have always had a passion for music. Its when I came to Uni and started seeing other people doing it I thought I'd like to do that. A couple of people tried to teach me but I just didn't understand the concept till Rukus taught me and it all just clicked into place.

2 - Is there any particular DJ’s style that you admire?
I love Jazzy Jef mainly because of his amazing scratching skills. He has been a pioneer in the game and is definitely someone I look up to. Other DJs I look up to are people like Rukus, DJ Angelo, Annie Mac (she's just so upfront) and DJ Tina T. I look at the last two as a mould for where I want to go, but I aim to do it in my way and bigger and better.

3 - As a female in this male dominated industry how do you cope with the macho stuff. How are you received by your male counterparts?
Generally I would say that I have been well received by my male counterparts. I'm often the only woman on a line up so depending on where I am they will either try to look after me or do their best to show me how great they are.I don't generally pay attention to 'the macho stuff' I just do me. I turn up and do my job & go home! i don't get involved in politics lol, I always try to keep a good relationship with everyone that i work with. People often judge me before they hear me play, but I generally gain their admiration or respect once they have heard me play. That's when I see a difference in attitudes, you can see that they understand I am not where I am just because I'm a female but because I am good at what I do and clearly love what I do.

4 - So you are one of the founding members of The Trinity Crew (whose members are in the Trinity Band and a dancer in Flawless). What is Trinity about?
Trinity is a collective of like minded talented individuals, there are three main sections Music, Dance and Drama which covers all disciplines from DJ’s, Rappers, Live Band, Dancers etc. Trinity was originally set up to showcase the huge talent that there was around us. Provide people with positive role models, and support talent in achieving their dreams and goals. The Moto of Trinity is Originality Stands Alone. Something we truly believe and work towards, being the best and the most original at what we do.

5 - You recently took part in the Derby Heat of the Movida Corona DJ competition in conjunction with MTV. How was the experience?
I'm still currently in the competition. I've got the regional finals next week so I am preparing myself for that mentally and technically. I have also recently been crowned regional champion for King of the Decks and the Nationals for that are in a few weeks. Its a wonderful experience that has allowed me to challenge myself whilst at the same time gaining new fans across the country. People that may otherwise have never seen or heard of me are now aware of the lil’ lady they call Figa. I look at it as an opportunity to potentially catapult myself into the leagues that I aspire to be in. If you don't take chances you are for ever wondering what if, so I would rather just put my all in and go for it. No matter what happens from this point I am still really proud of myself for giving it a go, and for over coming my fears and getting this far.

6 - Name some of the best places you have played at so far and where would you like to DJ at in the future?
Wow this is a hard one as I have been playing for over 10 years I have pretty much played in every club / pub in Derby lol. I have also played in Dubai, Egypt, Ghana, London Birmingham so I've 'been around' lol. My most notable place would have to be the Ministry Of Sound. It was a dream come true to play there and I will always hold that memory dear to me. My ambitions are to play in America and Ibiza and generally to have played in all the hot spots across the globe!!

7 - What inspires you in life?
I'm inspired by the people around me, by other successful people, by a passion for what I do. For years I did this without any recognition or praise but still had a deep rooted love for the art of Deejaying. Its a drive a to succeed that's naturally inside me that also inspires me to do better. A drive to become so successful that my friends and family do not have to want for anything. I believe that by doing what I love all the rest will follow and in turn I will be able to carry on doing what I Love which is Deejaying.

8 - Any inspirational words for girls/ladies and others who want to become a DJ one day?
Don't give up! Practice every day, go and find the people that are doing what you want to do and find out how they got where you want to be and use their life lessons to get what you want from life. Stay positive even when everything looks impossible or out of reach. Don't be scared to re-asses your situation and change your plans if needs be. But above all don't give up! Give everything expect Nothing!!!!

9 - How would you summarise yourself?
Hard working, ambitious and Passionate individual.. A lil lady with a big personality and even bigger skills behind the wheels of steel hehe…Queen of the Decks...Figa It Out
